Velocity

What is velocity ?

Velocity is speed in a direction. A speed of 20mph on its own is not a velocity it is only the magnitude of the velocity. A speed of 20mph to the North is a velocity. If we bear in mind that velocity is magnitude and direction a varying speed or a varying direction with constant speed are both classed as accelerations.

Velocity in Aviation

Velocity is numerically identical to speed, so we will not restate the mathematical derivation here.
We will however look at the way velocity is normally described in aviation terms.
In aviation we normally measure our speed in units of knots abbreviated to kts. 1Kt is nautical mile per hour.
This can be stated as a velocity if we include our track (direction of travel) say 300° Magnetic.
