Force
What is a force?
- A force is a push or a pull experienced by an object (mass) as a result of its interaction with another object.
- An object subjected to a balanced system of forces will continue continue doing exactly what is already doing.
- An imbalance of forces will cause a mass to accelerate.
- Weight is a force exerted on a mass by Gravity.
- The acceleration experienced by an object subject to imbalanced set of forces is proportional to the mass and the force applied
- Force is a vector quantity.
Types of force
Forces can be seperated into contact and non contact (or at a distance) forces.
examples of these are
| Contact |
Non Contact (at distance) |
| Frictional |
Gravitational |
| Air Resistance |
Magnetic |
| Applied |
| Spring |
Units
Force has dimensions of kg m s-2.
Force is measured in Units called Newtons indicated by N.
Other units for measuring force are the dyne, and the lb.
