The International Standard Atmosphere
Why do we need a standard atmosphere ?
We need a standard atmosphere to give us a datum from which to measure atmospheric (and as a result aircraft performance) variables.
The international standard atmosphere (ISA) specifies a number of parameters which describe variables in the atmosphere including (but not limited to) temperature, pressure and density.
