Technique For Quickstop From Downwind High Speed - Flare and Turn

A Flare and turn from downwind will result in more progress being made downwind before the turn starts, the turn will be tighter than if started immediately.

Technique For Quickstop From Downwind High Speed - Turn and Flare

A turn and flare from downwind will result in the turn being wider dues to the higher speed at entry, but less progress being made over the ground downwind.

Danger Of Holding Flare When Downwind

If the flare is held downwind it is possible that the airspeed will decay below effective translational lift, whilst the helicopter still has a downwind groundspeed, from this point until zero airpseed the power demand to fly level will increase accordingly and the helicopter will still be moving with respect to the ground.
