Selection Of Technique According to Available Power

In order of most power, to least power available the take-off techniques available to us are

  • Vertical (OGE)
  • Towering
  • Normal
  • Cushion Creep
  • Running

Effect Of Wind On Available Power

Compared to a nil wind condition an increase in wind will initially require a greater application of power. Eventually after the onset of vortex rollup and translational lift less power wil be required to transition. A wind speed of greater than 12-15kts will normally be seen to be beneficial. If power available is marginal then the take off must be performed into wind, as this will require the least power. The point at which translational lift will be gained can be seen when transitioning over grass. The point where the downwash stops disturbing the grass is the point at which translational lift will be gained.
